I freaking loved this. The witch/witch hunter pairing is already one of my biggest weaknesses, but that's not the only reason I became so enchanted. Aguirre's writing is so good. It completely absorbed me. I didn't expect that, since I wasn't a fan of her earlier work. But hey, I'm not complaining about the improvement! I came for the romance, got that - and I also got a powerful commentary on bigotry. Unexpected, but well done. Also, is this the season for bi heroines? If so, this bi reader is SO HERE FOR IT.

When Sleeping Woman Wake by Emma Pei Yin

Mingzhu, First Wife of her family, has never been her own woman, but she has always had Biyu, her childhood servant, by her side. Mingzhu wants a better life for her daughter, Qiang. This hope is endangered when the long shadow of war reaches her family in 1940s Hong Kong. These three women are separated and must travel their own journeys. Perhaps, one day, they will find each other again.

I've read many books in this era that contain the POVs of white British and Australian characters. I didn't realise just how much I was missing. Not only that, this is an excellent piece of Australian literature. Emma Pei Yin's writing has an assured voice and her prose moves so fluidly that you'll accidentally devour more chapters than you intended to. I adore books that illustrate the relationships between women. This is definitely one of those. A stunning debut.

Happy Medium by Sarah Adler

Gretchen Acorn is an in-demand "medium" for DC's wealthy, thanks to her bullshittery skills. Just because she can't really see ghosts doesn't mean she can't help people. So she agrees to head out to a goat farm and help Charlie Waybill with his ghost problem - but she doesn't expect to actually find a real ghost! How can she convince Charlie he's in danger when all he sees is a fraud?

A blurb from Beth O'Leary on the cover claims this is "pure sunshine". Actually, I found it rather depressing at times - and just like a lingering ghost, the plot has some unfinished business. That's not to say it wasn't a pleasant read. It was. But it wasn't wholly satisfying, either. If you want to while away your afternoon with a comfy but forgettable romance, this is the book for you.
