Bookish and the Beast (Once Upon a Con #3)
by Ashley Poston

Picture
Rosie Thorn met a wonderful guy whose name she never learned and whose face she never saw. So it's back to reality, which involves school and an unwritten college essay...and now Hollywood bad boy Vance Reign. Vance is just trying to make it until his eighteenth birthday, when he can go back to his LA life. But add in a library with rare Starfield books...and that's where magic can happen.

I really needed something to heal my heart today and this book was the perfect antidote. I love Rosie! I totally get her - I have a wide 7-foot bookcase stuffed full of out-of-print Star Wars EU books and I could never part with them. Rosie's friends... I need them in my life. Rosie's dad... he's fantastic and I was shipping him with a certain character before they even met!

Squee overload. Take one of these and see me in the morning.

New Year, New Guy by Angela Britnell

Picture
Laura's sister, Polly, has a wedding to prepare for and so Laura is put in charge of looking after Hunter, the old school friend of Polly's soon-to-be husband - and a surprise guest. Hunter and Laura immediately clash. Having to share space with him is bad enough...how is she supposed to keep him a secret from the groom? And will the groom even want to see him?

This...just wasn't as interesting as it sounded. The leads had no chemistry, the story felt flat and it was hard to find much of the goings on believable. I don't think it was terribly objectionable, though. And if some parts had been developed better then I might have enjoyed it.

Summer of Serenity by Nicola Marsh

Picture
I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Jy Atherton is sent to Acacia Haven to shut down its only school, under the guise of evaluating its students' poor performance. Summer O'Reilly knows what he's about and she has no intention of making it easy for him - but he's got a way of sneaking in past her defences. This is just a fling, far from the lights of Melbourne. Acacia Haven isn't the town for complications...or secrets.

Well, I should say this book had a way of sneaking in past my defences. I wasn't expecting to love it so much. Jy and Summer had intense chemistry and I was all in for their relationship from their very first scene together. I liked Acacia Haven and its people, especially Summer's mother and her journey to take back control of her life. I can also appreciate a book that has a self-aware dig at itself lol. I would happily revisit Acacia Haven in the future (and I hope I can!).

Artists Town (The Artist Books #1)
by Emma Baird

Picture
Daisy isn't thrilled when her parents decide to swap the usual holiday in France for a small town in Scotland. But then she meets Katrina, the cool friend she's always wanted - and Kippy, the gorgeous older boy who makes her feel new things. Daisy doesn't want to leave. She's thrilled when her parents decide to move to the town permanently...but not every holiday can last forever.

I really enjoyed the 1990s setting, mostly because it's the era I grew up in and I've not seen many new books use it (yet!). This YA novel would have fit in perfectly back then. But does it fit in now? Mostly, yes. Though it can't quite decide if it's a book for teens or for adults who want to relive their teen years. That said, Artists Town is well written and hits all the right notes.
