How Miss Rutherford Got Her Groove Back by Sophie Barnes![]() Emily Rutherford's dreams are shattered in an instant - the man she thought she was destined to wed is now betrothed to her best friend. Now her position is precarious. She has very little to her name. Perhaps what she needs is the help of Francis Riley, a man who has forgotten how to smile and would surely be the last choice if she ever were to wed. Surely... Barnes is one of my favourite Regency romance authors, so of course I decided to check out her earlier works... and I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that this novel is a bit rough by comparison. We have sexual assault on the page, a hero who breaks objects when he's angry (yikes), and a superficial attempt to mix Emma and Sense and Sensibility. But you can definitely see the potential here.

The Girl Who Stepped Into the Past by Sophie Barnes![]() Jane Edwards left her fiancé to go on her dream trip to England, but she didn't expect to also leave her time period - or immediately stumble across a murder in the 19th century. James Sullivan, Earl of Camden, thinks he has found his sister's murderer. But this strange woman might prove to be someone else entirely - someone who might steal his heart. I wasn't going to write a proper review for this book, since I've been doing a lot of them lately, but I loved it so much and figured it deserved the full write-up. I should have realised that Regency romance, time travel and murder mystery would be a winning combo! And it's not too long, so it's a quick, enjoyable read that doesn't overstay its welcome. Definitely one of my recent favourites. Sealed with a Yuletide Kiss by Sophie Barnes![]() I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Twenty-four romantic short stories are to be found in this Christmas-themed collection, designed to be read from the 1st to the 24th of December. This is undoubtedly the best advent calendar I've ever had the pleasure to open. Okay, so it's an ARC which means I had to read and review it beforehand, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to restrict myself to one story a day - they are heart-warming, sweet, and so easy to consume. The advent calendar idea is pretty awesome. It also works really well. And I'm not just saying this as a Sophie Barnes fan! Any reader who dabbles in historical romance will enjoy this.. |
