Implacable (The Lost Fleet: Outlander)
by Jack Campbell

Picture
John “Black Jack” Geary and his fleet are still in alien space and far from home. Theirs is an important mission, but not all non-human species wish them well - others seek to sabotage them by releasing new technology that will endanger the entire future of humanity. Geary doesn't want to disobey his orders or fire upon other Alliance ships, but now he might have to do just that.

A marked improvement over the previous book, though that was obviously suffering from its position as a bridge between two better parts of the series. Implacable delivers exactly what you want from a Geary book and fans will find nothing new or inventive here. And yet Campbell somehow manages to keep it all interesting. I've no idea how he does that. I'm sure I'd find Geary's adventures dull in the hands of another author.

Resolute (The Lost Fleet: Outlands #2)
by Jack Campbell

Picture
Admiral John Geary has been sent on a diplomatic mission to a species that remains guarded in their interactions with humans, but the dangers Geary faces are not just in the vastness of space - some of them are on his very own ships. His enemies want him to fail. His death is one way to achieve that. But he isn't called Black Jack for nothing.

I know what I'm getting when I pick up a Geary book - and that's exactly what I got. For the most part. Other books in this universe have dragged at times, but Resolute seemed to last an eternity. Frankly, this was a slog. A lot of the story seemed to be taken up with repetitive intrigue and the more interesting stuff was crammed into the last couple of chapters. This all said, Ensign Duck is freaking awesome.

Boundless (The Lost Fleet: Outlands #1)
by Jack Campbell

Picture
Admiral John "Black Jack" Geary has saved the Alliance from a variety of external threats, but the Alliance itself may prove to be his biggest challenge yet. Oh come on, how can I sum this up without making it sound like all the other books? Space stuff happens. Planetside stuff happens. Hypernet stuff happens. Onward to the next instalment!

John Geary is, hands down, my favourite Gary Stu. Campbell's books have their flaws, but damn it, they are just so enjoyable and I am full of glee every time Geary outmanoeuvres someone. It's worth noting that recent books in the Lost Fleet universe (prequels + this one) have shown considerable improvement with the absence of Rione, who seemed to exist only to serve a cringeworthy Madonna-Whore dynamic with Desjani. I can now enjoy the plot without wanting to hurl my book against a wall (yes, these books are so beloved in my household that we own physical copies lol).

PS: Yes, Geary gets laid in this one.
