A Wedding at the Jane Austen Dating Agency (Jane Austen Dating Agency #2)
by Fiona Woodifield

Picture
Sophie Johnson lived to tell the tale and got her happy ending with Darcy - or did she? Now running the Jane Austen Dating Agency with then help of Emma Woodtree (ha!), she has a wedding to plan for a successful agency couple and she's still trying to get that exclusive editorial position at the magazine. But all these competing priorities still don't stack up against the threat of Darcy's mother.

This sequel had more of the same Austen-esque shenanigans, so if you liked the first book you'll enjoy this one. I never thought that Darcy actually suited Sophie. Seeing him get booted in favour of an other suitor - well, that suited me just fine, though I'm sure I know what will happen in the next book. And of course I'll still read it! I enjoy this sort of light-hearted fun.

The Jane Austen Dating Agency (The Jane Austen Dating Agency #1)
by Fiona Woodifield

Picture
Sophie Johnson has landed her dream job - well, a job at her dream magazine anyway. Now if only she could find a man who looks at her the way that Darcy looks at Elizabeth Bennet. The Jane Austen Dating Agency sounds like the perfect solution, until Sophie finds herself tangled up in multiple situations that seem strangely familiar. But this isn't a Jane Austen book - it's real life! Isn't it?

This was a very fun book, even though it did get chaotic at times when yet another Jane Austen-esque character appeared. And while Sophie seemed mildly aware of how much things were mirroring the books she loves, I do wish that had been taken just a little bit further - made her seem a bit dense at times. All in all, a cute romcom that kept me entertained and left me smiling.

Girls of Fate and Fury (Girls of Paper & Fire #3)
by Natasha Ngan

Picture
Wren has lost the woman she loves to the enemy and retrieving her is no small task - especially with a war brewing between Wren and the palace. The war brewing closer to home may be even more dangerous. Lei is once more imprisoned by the Demon King, but she is no longer under his power. She will do whatever it takes. No matter what. Even if it means making the greatest sacrifice.

So that was emotionally draining - but in a good way. After a somewhat disappointing entry last time (Middle Book Syndrome is real, y'all), the series regains the momentum it has lacked since the end of the first book. And just in time too. Honestly, I would burn down the world for Wren and Lei. They've carried these books on their shoulders. I also like that Ngan has shown how complex the trauma caused by abuse can be. Allowing multiple characters to deal with it on their terms really helps with that. Some better pacing would have elevated this book to a tier of excellence (and some things felt unnecessary), but it's still a good read.

Love in Lockdown by Chloe James

Picture
Sophia has lost the life she thought she would have and now she has all of lockdown to think about it. Jack was a carefree spirit in Greece, a bartender living the high life, but now he is stuck inside and down to his last packets of crisps. He lives above Sophia and has never met her. Now, with them both on their balconies so often, here is a chance to connect - even though they can't see each other.

Pandemic fiction is like crack to me. Of course I was going to read this! I had to wait a bit, largely due to writing my own 'rona romance and not wanting to "cross the streams" as it were. Was the wait worth it? Yes! What a charming book - and for me, it echoed the slower-paced romances of centuries past. I loved meeting each new neighbour in the community. I really felt like I was one of them. A very enjoyable read.

Wife Support System by Kathleen Whyman

Picture
Polly feels alone in her large ex-B&B house, haunted by the past. Erica is struggling to balance her career with her daughter and her often-missing husband - and now the nanny has just quit. Louise loves her husband, but maybe it's best if they spend some time apart. The solution to all their woes is unusual: they all move into the B&B with their kids. At first, it's perfect. And then it's very, very not...

This was quite a solid debut and had a fascinating premise to kick things off. I did find it difficult, however, to become invested in the book since there were simply no likeable characters. Could I understand these women and their actions? Yes. Did I want to spend hours with them in my head? Good Lord, no. But I can still appreciate how this story was crafted. It hits all the notes it needs to.

New Year, New Guy by Angela Britnell

Picture
Laura's sister, Polly, has a wedding to prepare for and so Laura is put in charge of looking after Hunter, the old school friend of Polly's soon-to-be husband - and a surprise guest. Hunter and Laura immediately clash. Having to share space with him is bad enough...how is she supposed to keep him a secret from the groom? And will the groom even want to see him?

This...just wasn't as interesting as it sounded. The leads had no chemistry, the story felt flat and it was hard to find much of the goings on believable. I don't think it was terribly objectionable, though. And if some parts had been developed better then I might have enjoyed it.

The Girl Who Swapped by Emma Baird

Picture
Lottie and Josh aren't even out of their teens and are carefree students - so why did they just wake up in the bodies of two 40-something parents with children? Charlotte likes to keep her life in order, but now she's in the body of a young surfer and half a world away from her children. What is going on? And how do Lottie, Josh and Charlotte fix this mess they've found themselves in?

This book had an intriguing concept and a whole lot of potential - a pity that it wasn't fully realised. Some things really should have been fleshed out more, including the characters themselves. They seemed to be reduced to "young and tarty" and "old and boring". Still, there is some fun to be had in The Girl Who Swapped. And Baird's more recent books are much better, courtesy of experience.

Highland Chances (The Highland Books #4)
by Emma Baird

Picture
Times are changing in Lochalshie. It might've been easier if said times didn't occur when Gaby was pregnant and battling changes of her own at work! Gaby and Jack are run off their feet trying to keep a roof over their heads, as well as a roof over their favourite pub. But have they bitten off more than they can chew? And will The Lochside Welcome have to close its doors forever?

I just can't get enough of these books at the moment. The folks in Lochalshie are my friends and I would take a bullet for them. Okay, maybe not Zac. Ahem. Gaby and Jack's journey to parenthood was quite fun and I felt for them as chaos erupted. As always, there were moments where Baird made me chortle out loud. Prosecco and a loch in summer - need I say more? Okay, enough reviewing. I'm keen to get my nose into the next instalment of this runaway train.

Highland Heart (The Highland Books #2)
by Emma Baird

Picture
Katya has never had an instant connection with a man before and being with Dexter is incredibly exciting - if only he wasn't so geographically unavailable. Distance and miscommunications may prove fatal to their relationship. Or perhaps it will be the handsome newcomer Zac who finally drives that final wedge between?

Oooh I'm not sure about this one. Firstly, Katya just isn't Gaby and I couldn't connect to her (so that's more of a personal thing, I guess). Dexter being MIA so much meant that I never really saw him with Katya and thus I couldn't see how they'd ever work out as a couple. He also did something incredibly creepy - pretending to be someone else to Katya the whole time? WTF? And lastly, Mena... oh man. That really was a downer and I nearly DNFed.

I do love Lochalshie and its people and how Baird writes them, but I think I'll give this book a miss in future.

Highland Fling (The Highland Books #1)
by Emma Baird

Picture
Gaby has just said goodbye to a ten-year relationship and needs a new place to stay - fast. She accepts a cat-sitting position in a remote town in the Scottish Highlands, immediately getting on the wrong foot with local Jack McAllan (who looks uncannily like a certain Outlander actor). Staying in the house of a dating guru might be a mistake...especially when Gaby can't keep away from said guru's ex.

This was a delightful, breezy romcom that transported me right to the place where I currently wish I was right now. And it was the kind of popcorn entertainment that I desperately needed. I am such a sucker for romances with misunderstandings, cats and Scotsmen. Okay, mostly Scotsmen...ahem. Gaby was fun. The town was instantly familiar and its people were a scream! I'm definitely going to check out the rest of the series on my Kobo (it's easier to read on that than on Wattpad, frankly).
